The Full Monty (1997)

⭐⭐⭐️ 1/2

If Fight Club were about male stripping, you’d get The Full Monty.

This 1997 sleeper hit follows a group of misfit steelworkers made redundant as they plan an all male revue to raise some much needed funds. A lovable cast of all shapes, ages, size, and dance ability deliver delightful dialogue and sincerity from opening scene all the way to the full monty.

The entire film feels small and intimate, exactly where it should be. The small moments are where the sincerity and universal truths live. In the quiet moments between mates. Fathers and sons. Husbands and wives.

Many were overly surprised that this movie was nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, up against juggernaut Titanic. But, if anything, it showcases how smaller hits like The Full Monty deserve a spot on the same stage as Titanic-sized films. Both can bring a tear to your eye or a smile to a sullen face. This one brings the tap to your toes and a belly laugh- both well worth the price of admission.
