Certain Women

⭐️⭐️ 1/2

There is an audience that appreciates “slice of life” films - stories that unfold quietly, honoring the stillness and honor in the relatively mundane. I’m just not necessarily one of them.

Against the stunning backdrop of the Montana mountains, three paths of three women, Michelle Williams, Laura Dern, and Lily Gladstone to be precise, loosely cross. And wow are the paths of these powerful, opinionated women lonely. Degraded, mansplained, undermined… Certain Women just can’t get no respect.

The performances are solid and layered but the stories would have been more impactful as shorts. I’m just not sustained as a viewer by glances and gestures. And three stories pressed together to make one narrative overall feels incomplete and unresolved.
