Materialists (2025)

⭐️⭐️

This movie has all the ingredients to be a smash: buzzy “it” actors, chic Manhattan settings, and those ludicrously oversized NYC apartments that exist only in Hollywood math. But the spark never ignites—the pieces sit there, waiting for electricity that never comes.

Dakota Johnson plays a Manhattan matchmaker torn between two men: the perfect one (oh, just Pedro Pascal) and the hot mess of an ex (Chris Evans, naturally). Tough life, huh? And no, don’t worry—she doesn’t pull the “I choose myself” card.

Marketed as a rom-com, the film leans heavier on the “rom-dram.” It flashes the right genre cues when required, but its attempt at an “honest” look at modern dating and society’s shallow state lands flat—especially when delivered from the balcony of a $15 million New York apartment.

Tune in if you like your romance on the rocks, with a twist, or described in… mathematical terms.
