Will & Harper
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Will & Harper is a modern take on a buddy road trip comedy filled with deep feeling, hilarious moments, and refreshingly authentic connections. Smattered with visits from your favorite SNL cast members, the duo take on the best and worst of America, creating safe spaces for questions, understanding, and hope.
The best documentaries create a “fly on the wall” perspective, allowing the viewer to sit backseat, pun intended, to its subjects. And in that, the movie isn’t as successful. With someone as mega famous and distinctive as Will Ferrell, it’s just not possible. People stop and gawk. People hold back. People accommodate. The vile, disgusting undertones of ignorance and discrimination that do lurk are expressed only in online forums. But honestly, it’s probably safer that way. Harper is just trying to live her life. Live her truth. And sometimes the vulnerability needed to do that needs protecting. Allies, friends, family, community - anyone and everyone can be that for a person struggling. And as both protector and buffer, Will Ferrell is even more precious than I could have imagined.
Watch this one with a friend. Because, as the great Kristen Wiig famously sings, over the credits, “a friend is a friend is a friend, till the end.” Cue the crying (by me).
