Back to the Future: The Musical
⭐⭐
Musicals based on #movies are all the rage these days. And I’m not talking about movie #musicals made into stage musicals, like Moulin Rouge. I’m talking about the talkies that go from screen to kick line loving Broadway musicals. Sometimes you get a “Pretty Woman” (big mistake, huge) and sometimes you get a “Waitress” (a delicious slice of life). And I get why this trend is so popular. Nostalgia is a powerful drug. But not powerful enough to save “Back to the Future: The Musical”. The added song and dance doesn’t add anything to the storyline or characters immortalized in the 1985 classic film. Other than the incredible effects, including the time traveling DeLorean affixed with flux capacitor, there’s nothing fresh about the show.
Instead of sidestepping the less timeless moments of the film, the “my mother is attracted to me” plot line for example, there are two songs about it. Interesting choice.
Good or bad, everyone involved does go into this time warp with gusto. But without any real surprises for the audience, I can’t say it was time well spent.
